Chapter Eleven

“I STILL CAN’T BELIEVE they fired you.” Kayla handed Louise a mug of hot chocolate. A chill nipped the air where they sat on the porch swing, watching the sun begin its slow descent over the tree line. “Can you sue them for wrongful termination?”

“Why would I do that? It only hurts the foundation. They’re as much a victim in this as I am.” It was a token consolation, one that Louise clung to like a lifeline. No, she wasn’t happy with what they’d done, but she understood their position. Funding for nonprofits was always precarious, and they couldn’t afford to sacrifice a large chunk of their budget over a matter of principle.

Kayla didn’t say a word, but the sound she made said exactly what she thought about the foundation being a victim. She pushed her feet against the old wooden floorboards, making the swing sway gently.

The scent of pine and horses carried over the wind, and Louise glanced toward the stable. The horses had already been brought in for the evening, and by now they were happily munching on their late-afternoon allotment of grains.

When her phone vibrated, she checked the number on the screen. It was Delaney, which meant the foundation’s gossip chain must have spread the news about her termination. She’d planned to call him earlier but hadn’t gotten around to it, mostly because she’d been too emotionally drained after saying good-bye to everyone at the animal hospital. Not ready to talk to him, at least not yet, she let the call go to voicemail.

Kayla sipped from her mug, her dark eyebrows pinched together. “It’s still wrong for them to give in to blackmail.”

With her gaze fixed on the setting sun, Louise held back a sigh. There was no stopping Kayla once she went into momma-bear mode, so she might as well let her big sister rage on until she blew it out of her system. Louise raised her mug to take a sip, but paused at the smell of alcohol. “Did you put Kahlúa in this?”

A faint smile warmed Kayla’s mouth. “After what happened, I figured you could use something with a little kick.”

She wasn’t going to argue the point. Hell, the way she felt, she was tempted to chug Kahlúa straight from the bottle. “As long as I’m not drinking alone.”

Kayla raised her mug in salute. “I’ve been thinking. I could use your help on the farm. Having an on-site veterinarian would save me a small fortune. And since Amy can’t ride until after the baby’s born, you could train the horses ’til then.”

She cast a sideways glance at her sister. “I didn’t spend eight years in school to train horses.” Yes, she knew she sounded like an ingrate, but she couldn’t help the way she felt.

“I know that.” A note of irritation seeped into Kayla’s husky voice. “But I need a trainer, and you need something to keep yourself busy while you’re looking for another job. Why is that such a problem?”

Frustrated and conflicted, she blew out a heavy exhale.
